Six Items or Less 30 day Challenge

I had a stylist friend of mine, Robert Ballew, challenge me to wear only 6 main clothing items for the next 30 days. It is to raise awareness for Fresh Start Women's Foundation. I accepted the challenge, and after going thru my closet, I chose the following for a fall wardrobe in AZ. Black skirt, beige skirt, black, grey and purple tshirts, and a black dressier top. I am making a one day exception to this rule (yes- you can make a few exceptions if you need) for a wedding I am attending at the end of the month so I dont have to wear all black to the wedding. Lets see how creative I can become with vests, and accessories this month!

How many times do we stand in our closet and say that we have nothing to wear. With so many people looking for new jobs these days, and not having a budget for that new wardrobe, start thinking outside the box (or closet!) By having just a few key pieces (even as few as 6!) and accessories, you can vary your looks enough to dress for over a month, with very few people knowing that you only have 6 pieces in your wardrobe. There are some exceptions that do not count towards the six items: undergarments, swim wear, workout clothes, work uniforms, outer jackets (rain slicker, outdoor jacket, sweaters), shoes and accessories.... THANK GOODNESS!!!

If you would like to take a look at your wardrobe, and take this challenge with us, please let us know! We would also like for you to go thru your wardrobe, and help donate clothes to Fresh Start so that we can help give women a chance to start over!
There is also a place to donate directly to Fresh Start on LifeLibertyLux.com.

Question to Robert Ballew on LifeLibertyLux.com

This was an article that I wrote for the www.LifeLibertyLux.com website.

“Okay Robert…[Style Commandment]#8… makeup and I don’t get along. Think ‘nature girl’. Contacts made me stop wearing mascara, as did the popular spider eye look… but every once in a while I feel the need (and… I stopped the contacts!). BUT I hate most/all of the products… with what line are you seeing women have the most success (read: happiness)?” April M

Heather Wilson – Makeup Artist writes…

April,
I am sorry that you have had problems with makeup in the past. So many times we will try three or four products, and we have a bad reaction, and feel that we can not wear anything. There are some amazing products that you can use, and still have a “natural” look! Most people that don’t wear makeup- feel more comfortable putting on 3 or 4 products, not a dozen. Don’t buy too many items, only do a couple of things to bring your eyes out and even out your skin tone. You will not only feel more comfortable, but you will look like yourself! If you go to a cosmetic store to get advice, tell them you only want to work with 4 or 5 products- they should not only be willing to do it- but should be happy to show you how to do it!

Some of my favorites are…

I am a huge fan of Purely Cosmetics mineral foundations. They can be layered for a light to a fuller coverage. The loose mineral makeup foundations are chemical, dye, and talc- free. They are so pure that they’re an ideal match for people with problem acne, as there is nothing to clog your pores. Our pure mineral makeup is hypo- allergenic, so it won’t rub off, has sun protection, and extremely lightweight. There are also a great number of tinted moisturizers out there. They are usually a light weight moisturizer that has a sunscreen, and a light tint. My favorites are Jan Marini or Laura Mercier.

Since you are no longer wearing contacts, it will give you a lot more options in shadows and mascaras. I am a fan of the waterproof mascaras if you tend to smudge. The key to a waterproof mascara, is to get the waterproof eye makeup remover to go with it, and use it! There are two that I love! If I had an unlimited buget…. the YSL false lash mascara in waterproof is by far my favorite! It does keeps my lashes feeling soft and natural, while giving a thick full lash, but when you need to replace your mascara every 4-6 weeks, it does get to be more of a luxury. In my kit I use the Cover Girl Lash Blast. It is a great alternative, and still comes off easily with a remover. They will both hold up to humidity and swimming well too!

If you are going to wear an eye shadow, I suggest a cream, or using a shadow base with your powders. A cream shadow like Makeup Forever’s Aqua-Cream is an amazing product. You can use it as an eye liner, an eye shadow, or both! It is easy to use, you can layer the colors, and they stay put! There are also cream eye shadow bases like Laura Merciers, that comes in multiple colors so you can use them by them selves or by putting shadow on top of it. It will not only help to hold the shadow in place, but will also help keep the colors of the shadows true.

Finish the look with a lip gloss. You will not only feel more like yourself, you wont feel like someone else! I have some favorites that are $1.99 at Walgreens, all the way to Chanel’s Glossimer lip gloss. It is one of those things you will have to see what you like.
Please fell free to email me if you have any other questions!

Sincerely,

Heather Wilson

Heat Proof your makeup

I got the opportunity to be on Your Life A-Z yesterday to tell Arizona how to heat proof your summer makeup.

Start with putting your eye cream and your toner in the refrigerator. I love the Sampar Eye Rule because when cool, the roller ball helps reduce puffyness even more!

Make sure you follow your skincare with a sunscreen- either by its self, or in a tinted moisturizer. I was showing the Jan Marini sunscreen and the Cargo Tinted Moisturizer. If you tend to be really oily or sweaty in this weather, be sure to put on an oil obsorbing lotion, it will help to control any shine that you may have. Try the Bliss Oil Control Lotion.

There are a lot of new water proof, and water resistant products out there. Some of my tried and tested products are the Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Liner. Laura Mercier Eye Shadow base, Cover Girl Waterproof Lashblast Mascara, Nars cream blush, and the Cover Girl lip stains.

Thank you to Gabrielle for her beautiful face...

my Talika Lipocils experience

To be honest with you.... I was a skeptic.

Can a product that is 1/2 the price of those big name brands grow my lashes as long as the ads say?? The Talika Lipocils ads say that "in 28 days you can have lashes that are 36% longer. Its new and improved formula made from a blend of natural actives to regrow sparse lashes, grow and thicken existing ones, magnify color and curl your lashes. You can have longer, fuller, darker lashes with beautiful, eye opening curl in just 28 days!...without side effects."

I recieved my tube of Lipocils mid Jan, and started using the product a couple of weeks later. I have super blonde lashes, so in order for you to see the difference in the leangth of my lashes, I did have to put mascara on. Here is the photo that I took the first of Feb.

The product is really easy to use. It is a clear gel that you put on just like you would a mascara, morning and night along with your skincare. I knew my lashes were growing, just did not realize how much!!! After taking about 100 pics to get one at the same angle that was in focus... I am able to show you the after photo!

I am sold!!! I will not be without my Lipocils!! Order yours today!!

While you are ordering your Lipocils... order they Eye Dream as well!! I have definitely been impressed with the depuffing and fine line improvement!

Shopping with Clients

I had a great long time client call the other day asking for an update to her makeup bag. She is traveling to Europe for 3 weeks this summer. They would be spending time on the beach as well as going to the opera and formal events while there and asked what basics she could take with to get the maximum looks, with the fewest products. I am a firm believer in multi-tasking products, while traveling with as little as possible! We took off to the mall so I could show her how to use the following products, as well as help her find the correct colors for her. I can do the same for you if you want!

Here are some of the products we were looking for:

Tinted Moisturizer Find a good tinted moisturizer that has a sunscreen and a light tint. It will give some coverage to even out the skin, and protect and moisturize at the same time. Some of my favorites are ">Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer or the ">Jan Marini Tinted Moisturizer.

Cream Blush Most cream blushes can be both a blush and a lip tint. You can vary the color for day or night, as well as add a touch of color to your lips. Try ">Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge For Lips And Cheeks or ">Nars Cream Blush.

Gel Eyeliner The best part of a gel eyeliner is that you do not have to worry about it smudging or wearing off through the day, and they are waterproof... yet you can get a very fine, or smoke it out for the evening. Some of my favorites- MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Creamliner or Purely Cosmetics Gel Liner

Palette find a line that has a container to hold multiple eye shadows or lip colors. MAKE UP FOR EVER and Yaby Cosmetics both have shadow palettes and shadows to fill it with that can not be beat! Yaby Cosmetics also has a palette that you can put shadows and lips in! Japanesque has empty palettes that can be filled with 6 of your favorite lipsticks, so you dont have a bunch of tube rolling around your purse.

Lips Lips definitely need protection while on vacation. We are subjected to sun, and wind, and without that special care, our lips can end up chapped and painful. Try ">Orlane Lip Screen or ">Laura Mercier Lip Silk

Waterproof Mascara Traveling is not the time to be trying new products... but these waterproof mascaras will hold up to any beach time as well as keep you looking fabulous for your evening at the Opera! YSL Luxurious Mascara and ">Cle de Peau Mascara.

I hope you all have a fun summer break!! Please let me know what your favorites are!

Do you have Dark Under Eye Circles

Sadly... we all wake up with them on occassion.

There are ways to hide and get rid of those pesky dark circles! Are your dark circles given down to you from your parents, from allergies, or just a rough night out?? If you answered yes to any of those, use a good eye cream such as ">Sampar Eye Rule and a good concealer! There are all kinds of eye creams out there that will help with puffiness, and reducing those dark circles. I like to keep my ">Sampar Eye Rule in the refrigerator, so that it is a cool roller ball that refreshes, while reducing the puffiness and darkness. Then I will use the ">Bobbi Brown creamy concealers. Depending on how dark you are, you may need a peachy base first to cut the blue of the dark circles. I like the ">Bisque Bobbi Brown concealer, then cover that with the correct shade to match your skin tone. The best application is with a brush, then pat it in to the skin so that you dont get creasing or smudging. If you tend to be oilier, you may need to put a little powder on the concealer to help with the wearability.

If you have any other questions... please ask!!!

Bad Customer Service or Murcury in Retrograde?

I just dont seem to get it these days...

People complain that there is no business, and/ or that business is slow! Maybe that would not be the case if these companies realized that good customer service goes a long way!!

It may be that Mercury is in retrograde, or the moon is made out of cheese, or that businesses just don't care any more! Have they been slow for so long that they dont know how to treat paying clients any more?

Last week I called a local spa. I was given a gift card to this spa from a bride, and after a long week in Las Vegas, I was looking forward to spending a day getting pampered. I asked if they had any appointments for a massage, and was told they had an opening at noon, and on my way to get my gift card to reserve my appointment, I asked if they had opening for reflexology. She said you had availability at 2pm.
I said great that I would take them both..... I was really looking forward to a relaxing day after a week of walking many miles carrying lots of bags.

I got to the spa around 11:30 so I could relax a little before my massage.
At 12:20, I went out to ask why I was never called in for my massage, and I was informed that she cancelled my massage apt when I asked about the reflexology apt.
The manager informed me that very few people book multiple appointments these days, and she didnt think I would want both. I was amazed. She finally got me in to a massage apt, but then when my reflexology apt came up at 2 pm and at 2:15 I had still not been called, I was frustrated, I got dressed, and went to the front desk.
When I asked what happened with the reflexology apt, I was informed by the manager that she canceled my reflexology apointment when I got the massage. After the conversation that we had just had at noon, I dont know how she would have gotten the impression that I wanted to cancel the reflexology apt.

To say the least, I was upset. The manager offered no explanation except it was a mixup in communication.

I can not say that I was relaxed in the least after leaving... in fact- I think I was more tense after a supposedly "relaxing afternoon" at the Lamar Spa in Scottsdale.

I have tried every day for the last week and a half, to get ahold of the owner of the spa, with emails being bounced back, and no phone calls returned. Do businesses not get that just a simple "I'm sorry there was a miscommunication... Please give us another chance" sometimes is all it takes.

And some businesses wonder why they are closing the doors.......

Orlane has a new product for 25-35 year olds!

I got the opportunity last month during New York Fashion Week to go to visit the Orlane Lounge at the Bryant Park Hotel. They provided a beautiful view overlooking the Bryant Park tents, a psycic to tell me what was in my future, and a great lesson on their newest product!
I have now had a month to try out their newest line of products and I must say that I wish I was still in the 20-35 year old age group to continue using their newest line of skincare, Orlane Anagenese 25+! Most of us in the "40 is the new 30" age group, wish that we had started to use a line like this 10-15 years ago to prevent the signs of aging that we are starting to see now. Most skin damage occurs between the ages of 25-35 from sun damage. We need to do the
repairative work in our 20s.... not waiting for it to show up in our 40s! By effectively fighting against invisible signs of aging, you can delay the transformation of the skin. Based on the science of Cellular Growth Factors, Anagenese 25+ is a source of continued radiance and youthfulness by helping to rebuild the collagen in the skin.

The Orlane Anagenese 25+ works with pro-cellular growth factors which are designed to jumpstart collagen production and cellular renewal. They also contain Vitamins A and C and other minerals to smooth and protect the skin. This program contains three easy steps: First Time-Fighting Morning Recovery Serum, First Time-Fighting Care Eye Contour, and First Time-Fighting Care face cream. All three of these skincare products spread and absorb quickly, leave the surface of the skin feeling very smooth, but not greasy or oily, and it has a beautiful soft scent. My skin has a beautiful "glow" to it after using the serum for just one month! I have also had a couple of long days, and short nights, and you can use the serum (or Morning Recovery Complex) as a pick me up during the day. (Just a little bit over the makeup, gives a beautiful radiance to the skin, without breaking down the makeup) This is a definite must have line!!

Perfect Palette for your kit!!

Are you looking for a product that is going to be a long lasting... very highly pigmented, and very reasonably priced?? Then you need to check out the Yaby Cosmetic Palettes!

This seems to be the never ending quest for makeup artists!
I came across a line last year, who's products I was honestly leery of. They were so tiny, how can they last? Was it really going to be worth buying these palettes if I was going to have to replace the discs of color every month? The discs of color were very reasonably priced (refills from $3-$20) , so I bought a couple of colors at the Makeup Show in NYC last summer, and was blown away!! Next thing I knew, I was buying 3 complete color palettes, the concealer palette and lots of empties to make my own palettes. I can honestly say that I could not live without my Yaby Palettes in my kit!

I had the chance to introduce the color palettes to some friends at this years Makeup Show in LA. They have all had the same reviews I had! This was a product that was compact, easy to carry, a huge variety of colors, and not only lasted on the skin.... but really do last a long time in your kit as well!!! If you cant wait to get your products at the Makeup Show in NYC in May, you can order them direct thru http://www.yabycosmetics.com/ or thru Camera Ready Cosmetics.
Let me know what your favorite product is!!

How can you get this years Academy Awards looks

There were two definite looks that walked down the red carpet tonight at the Oscars. The soft dramatic eye, and the red lips. Here are two examples of how you can acheive these looks.

Demi Moore was absolutely radiant tonight at the Academy Awards. From the top of her flowy soft updo, her classic beautiful glow, down to the bottom of her dusty rose Versace gown, she shows us how to radiate beauty. Celebrity makeup artist Jo Strettell did the beauty honors for the always-stunning Demi.

In order to get this look, we got Jo to tell us the secrets. Jo mixed two foundations for Demi, Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation and Lasting Silk UV SPF 34 Compact Foundation. She then swept Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat (Radiant Touch Highlighter) under the eyes and around the nose. Lancome Blush Subtil Delicate Oil-Free Powder Blush
in Rose Fresque, just on the apples of the cheeks, brightened her complexion. Jo created the soft, smoky eye with lancome color design
in Honeymoon as a highlight from right above the lid to the brow bone and on the inner corner of the eyes. Lancome Le Crayon Khol Eye Liner Pencil Black Coffee - Regular Size Unboxed in Gris Noir lined the eyes and Jo softened the look by smudging the line. The lashes were curled with a shu uemura Eyelash Curler 1 ea, followed by several coats of Lancome Hypnose Mascara in Excessive Black on the top lashes and LancĂ´me Oscillation Water Resistant Mascara in Black to the lower lashes. For Demi’s lips, the combination of Lancome Color Fever Lip Color - No. 306 Rose Defile ( Cream ) - 4.2ml/0.14oz in Rich Cashmere and Lancome Juicy Tubes Lip Gloss Ultra Shiny in Spring Fling created a pretty, nude lip that had just enough pop.

Sandra Bullock won the Best Actress Award for her role in The Blind Side (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)">the Blind Side and looked stunning while accepting it.

“Tonight was Sandra’s big night and she was in a happy, ethereal mood. I wanted her to look like the true movie star she is, so we went with modern classy Hollywood – dewy skin, soft eyes, and a bold classic red lip.” — Angela Levin

Angela prepped Sandra’s skin with CHANEL by Chanel: Sublimage Essential Regenerating Cream--/1.7OZ. She then used a foundation brush to apply CHANEL Vitalumieres Satin Smoothing Fluid Makeup Satin Smoothing Fluid Makeup in Shell all over the face. Angela created a structured brow with the soft brown powder in the limited edition New Chanel Le Sourcil De Chanel Brow Shaping Kit Brow Powder Brush Applicator Mirror 5g/0.17oz Nice. She lined Sandra’s eyes with the darker brown shade in the same palette.

Finally, she applied three coats of Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara Volume Length Curl Separation in Noir for sexy, glamorous lashes. To create the real focus of Sandra’s look – a gorgeous, bold red lip – Angela applied Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lip Colour - # 22 Paris - 3.5g/0.12oz Colour in Paris. She finished the look by gently dabbing a bit of the same lip colour on the apples of Sandra’s cheeks – Angela’s signature makeup trick.

LA Makeup Show

I had a fabulous time this last weekend at the LA Makeup Show. The Powder Group knows how to put on a show!!

There were so many great companies represented at the show! My first stop at the show was to get stocked up on my Yaby Cosmetics. They have such easy palettes to fill yourself, or you can buy pre filled palettes that have such great long lasting colors! I got to pick up some Embryolisse Hydrating Cream with Orange Extract. It is great as a moisturizer for all skin types as well as a primer for under foundations. Of course Make Up For Ever is a must have with their HD MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Invisible Cover Foundation, MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Microfinish Blush and MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Microfinish Powder!
OCC (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics) has new colors to add to all of the other fun colors of lip tars! The Lip Tars are a definite must add to any color collection. They can be used alone as a gloss or with other colors.
Look for upcoming video posts reviewing the makeup private classes and public classes that were given, as well as reviews on different products!

G STAR 2010 fall NYFW

It seemed like all of New York turned out at the Hamerstien Ballroom for the G Star Show! Celebrities such as Liv Tyler, Adam Lambert, John Legend, Kelly Osborn, Natasha Bedingfield, Nate Parker and others were all in attendance for the Fall Fashion Show. The show was filled with bold, bright, primary colors and of course there was different shades of denim. The show started with bright sunny yellow jackets and hats that were so bold that they looked straight out of a comic book! Bold, flowing, sexy, chunky, and nautical were all words used to describe the clothes in the show. Trench coats, Military inspired jackets, fitted sweaters and cartigans, and great pairs of jeans!

Christian Cota Fashion Show

In his own words.... "Christian Cota seizes inspiration from the Cubist way of seeing. Perspectives multiplied, and Collapsed. Organic forms disassembled and puzzled back together angle by angle." It is a beautiful way of mixing patters, draping, shapes and textures. Huge chunky bold bracelets and necklaces are stacked and layered. Big belts, bold stripes, and amazing patterns in Ochre, Chrimson, Copper, Purple, and Onyx. With the bold colors in the clothes, a neutral color pallette for the lips and eyes was a beautiful choice. It is paired with a great bang to bring out the eyes.

Thanks to IHeartHeels for allowing me to cover this show for you!

First blog should be First NYFW show!

I thought that it was only appropriate to start my first blog out with my first Show at New York Fashion Week of 2010! I was asked by www.IHeartHeels.com to cover the Vivienne Tam show at her showroom. It was packed to capacity!

She did a beautiful interpretation of the Chinese Zodiak inspired line. It was filled with overtones of ruffles, layers, fur and sequins! It was beautiful to see the way that she cut and seamed the fabric to lay and look exactly like huge feathers on her "Monkey" fur coat. She also used multi colored gathered appliques to make stylists swear that the skirt on the black belted dress was covered in sequins, when not a single glitter was on the dress. Whoever told you can't mix your patterns with sequins with patterned tights and strappy heels was wrong! Just take a look at the "Snake" print sequins with the animal print blouse, that she put with a patterned tight! Amazing!! My absolute favorite piece of the night was the Cream "Tiger" slashed coat! It was layer after layer down one sleeve and the side of the coat.... Stunning!

To top off the entire look, Makeup Artist Charlotte Willer, with Maybelline Cosmetics informed me that the look of the night was the bold bright red lip that was acheived by using the Color Sensational Lip Liner "Red #50". The clean fresh glowing skin was the Maybelline Mineral Powder Liquid Foundation and Mineral Powder Concealer. She finished the look off with Define a Brow. The only product used on the eye was the Eye Studio Quad and using only the Beige Shimmer Point in the inside corner of the eye. To keep with the clean fresh look they chose a perfect, tight ponytail!
